This series of Five Lectures considers the importance of Raymond Williams’ contribution to Keywords & Culture, in Cultural Studies, Translation Studies, Literary Studies and Linguistic Anthropology. But it identifies two different challenges to this approach to worldviews. Linguists and philosophers have challenged the “anglocentric” nature of the project, arguing for a linguistically-informed approach to Keywords within Linguistic Worldviews. Inspired by Wilhelm von Humboldt, Anna Wierzbicka, Barbara Cassin, Jerzy Bartmiński, and the Underhill & Giannoto’s contribution, Migrating Meanings (2019), an argument is made for opening up and adapting William’s project to an ethnolinguistic approach. Five shared principles for language study are discussed in relation to Keywords & Cultures.
