A close reading of Willams’ entries for the As and Bs of his Keywords enables Underhill to reaffirm the rigour and the urgency of Williams’ project. From Common land to Community and from Anarchism to Alienation, it is clear that Williams has much to tell us about the origins of our words, the political and ideological traditions they grow out of, and the way they tend to make us conform to models of society and success, profit and progress, that often serve the interests of others who control education, the public media and our institutions. Far from undermining his approach, Nair & deSouza’s approach tends to confirm the idea that keywords serve the purposes of certain classes and consolidate the way they recount history and set the “progressive” ideals for our society. But Nair & deSouza record not only the oppressive keywords but also stress that subordinates know how to resist pressure.
