The conclusion to these five lectures on Keywords and Cultures takes on board the lessons learned from Nair & deSouza’s Keywords for India by highlighting the diversity and rigour and scope of the project. Erudite spiritual words from the philosophical tradition are juxtaposed with down-to-earth everyday terms to show how “beauty parlour” and “gym” are now a part of Indian aesthetics and social aspirations. Beauty, desire and death are highlighted as ways in which Nair & deSouza’s contributors demonstrate the complexity of keyword “clusters” and the way they give coherence to moral and social practices in India. The Conclusion briefly evokes, Underhill & Gianninoto, Bartmiński, Wierzbicka and Cassin and their own contributions to keywords and culture, but affirms that the Indian challenge is likely to force people to rethink their aims and methodologies when they investigate keywords and cultures in the future.
